Special lecture on “Approach of the Courts to Punishment with specific reference to Capital Punishment”by Mr. Sidharth Luthra.

A special lecture was organized on 19/02/2022 (Saturday) from 4.00pm to 6.15 pm for final year B.A, L.L.B Students through the Zoom Platform. The topic of the lecture was “Approach of the Courts to Punishment with specific reference to Capital Punishment”. Mr. Sidharth Luthra is a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India. He was formerly the Additional Solicitor General for India at the Supreme Court. He represented the Union and State Governments in a variety of matters including those relating to fundamental rights, criminal law, juvenile rights, environment laws, electoral reform, education and policy issues.

Mr. Sidharth Luthra gave a comprehensive talk on various aspects of Sentencing Policy, Capital Punishment and, Judicial discretion. He pointed out the importance of collective consciences of the society in awarding the appropriate sentence. Imposition of appropriate punishment is the manner in which Courts must respond to society’s cry for justice against crime. He also highlights the need to adopt structured sentencing guidelines in order to minimize uncertainty in awarding sentences.

The talk was followed with an interactive session. Students took an active role in the discussions, raising their concerns about various aspects of the criminal justice and sentencing systems.
